Marc Chagall Life and Work

Marc Chagall is known chiefly as a painter of fantasy, but the art of this septuagenarian defies classification. His fantasies of lovers floating on air, of wedding bouquets towering above the skyline, of scenes recalled from his native Vitebsk in Russia, of opsy-turvy houses and churches, of fiddlers and aerial clocks— these are Chagalls images that are cherished by his ever-growing public. But Chagall, though completely at home in Cubism, Surrealism, and Expressionism, has never belonged to any school unless it be the School of Paris, in the city where he has often lived and where some of his greatest work has been accomplished.
