This latest illustrated edition of the ongoing and informative series of titles by the retired school teacher and lecturer David Bilton principally examines Der Große Krieg (The Great War) from the viewpoint of the Deutsches Heer, (The Imperial German Army). At its heart is its Collecting together of a unique and wide ranging group of Archival images portraying all ranks of the Deutsches Heer, sourced from various image libraries from all across the world, and resulting in a detailed and fascinating photographic examination of these servicemen both at war and at rest.  This volume examines the campaign and the ground battles that resulted from it over 1914 in and around Flanders, which saw the Heer fighting in turn against Belgian, French, British and Commonwealth Military units and covers all events upto and shortly after The First Battle of Ypres, October-November 1914. Many of the German divisions involved in this campaign were formed out of reservists and, in many cases, untrained volunteers or former school students. Their above average casualty rate later gave rise to the post Great War myth known as the 'Slaughter of Innocents' which was later weaponised in Germany during the late 1920s and 1930s by various groups for political advantage.
